If you’ve ever wondered why your neighbor’s lawn looks like a golf course while yours struggles through August, the answer usually isn’t luck — it’s feeding. Grass is a living plant, and like any plant, it performs based on what it’s given. Here in New England, where lawns fight through freezing winters, wet springs, and dry summer stretches, a smart fertilization strategy is the difference between a lawn that survives and one that thrives.

Why Timing Matters More Than Product

The biggest fertilization mistake homeowners make isn’t choosing the wrong bag at the hardware store — it’s applying at the wrong time. Cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass, fescue, and perennial ryegrass (the backbone of nearly every Seacoast lawn) have two major growth periods: spring and fall. Feeding your lawn in the heat of July does very little except stress the plant and feed the weeds.

A well-timed program looks like this:

Early Spring (April–May): A balanced feeding with pre-emergent crabgrass control. This wakes the lawn up after winter and puts down a barrier before crabgrass seeds germinate — once crabgrass is up, it’s much harder to control.

Late Spring (May–June): A second feeding to sustain growth heading into summer, often paired with broadleaf weed control targeting dandelions, clover, and plantain while they’re actively growing.

Summer (June–August): A lighter, slow-release feeding. The goal in summer isn’t pushing growth — it’s maintaining color and helping the lawn tolerate heat and drought stress.

Early Fall (September): The most important feeding of the year. Cool nights and warm soil create ideal growing conditions, and the lawn is recovering from summer and rebuilding its root system.

Late Fall (October–November): A winterizer application. The lawn stores these nutrients in its roots over winter and uses them for an early, strong green-up in spring. Homeowners who skip this application are always a few weeks behind their neighbors come April.

Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium — What They Actually Do

Every fertilizer bag lists three numbers (like 24-0-6). These represent nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium:

  • Nitrogen drives green color and top growth. It’s the main event in most lawn feedings.
  • Phosphorus supports root development, primarily needed when establishing new seed. Note that New Hampshire restricts phosphorus applications on established lawns unless a soil test shows a deficiency — one more reason professional programs use soil-appropriate blends.
  • Potassium is the unsung hero. It strengthens cell walls, improving drought tolerance, disease resistance, and winter hardiness.

Slow-Release vs. Quick-Release

Cheap fertilizers dump nitrogen all at once. You get a fast, dramatic green-up followed by a crash — and a lawn that grows so fast you’re mowing twice a week. Quality slow-release fertilizers meter nutrients out over 6–8 weeks, producing steady color, even growth, and far less risk of burn or runoff. This is one of the biggest differences between a professional program and a DIY approach.
